Any other useful information

The UPC Chemical Engineering Department (DEQ) concentrates most of the teaching and research activities of the UPC in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. RTD activities focus on Process Engineering, Polymers and Plastics, Biotechnology, Food Technology and Environmental Engineering. The DEQ Research Group on Design, Operation and Control of Chemical and Biotechnology Processes (DEQ-TQG-LCMA) has a proven expertise in computer modelling, simulation, optimisation and control of industrial processes at the academic and industrial levels. Although, both batch and continuous processes are contemplated, intensive research work has been developed in the area of batch processing and flexible manufacturing. This includes plant pre-design and retrofitting, optimum scheduling and production planning and on-line control of multipurpose batch/semi-continuous operations, particularly in relation with the use of computers to achieve these functions. Implementation and validation of the above is made in a CIM environment running under RTO scheme.

The DEQ-TQG-LCMA group participated in the GCO Project, taking a leading role in the definition of some parts of the CO standards and also in the implementation of software prototypes for testing and assessment of other parts. The group has also participated successfully in the elaboration of different parts of the CO tester (MINLP and THERMO). The group is currently associated member of CO-LAN.

Regarding the use of CO standards to specific commercial applications, during the last 20 years, the DEQ-TQG-LCMA group has been developing software applications dealing with large and complex decision making problems (supply-chain, planning and scheduling, supervisory system and diagnosis), real-time optimisation (RTE) and decision support structures leading to the same objectives (see previous section). The software produced is currently being integrated in an open framework (MOPP) which is making extensive use of present standards like ISA S88 and SP95 and, obviously, CO
