History of Reaction Engineering International

Reaction Engineering International (REI) was founded in 1990 by Michael Heap, David Pershing and Philip Smith as an engineering consulting firm focused on solving challenging combustion problems. In 2000, after the untimely passing of Michael Heap, the current ownership group, drawn entirely from senior employees, assumed leadership of the company. The present management team, headed by Dr. Bradley Adams and Dr. Michael Bockelie, has maintained the high level of integrity and technical excellence established by REI's original founders.

Today REI remains a growing R&D consulting firm with an internationally recognized expertise in combustion and environmental solutions. Current Interest in CAPE-OPEN

The US Department of Energy (DOE) National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) is facilitating the development of future zero-emissions, high-efficiency polygeneration plant configurations that will be based on IGCC technology.

Through co-funding from a US Department of Energy NETL “Clean Coal” R&D award, Reaction Engineering International (REI) is assisting in the development of NETL’s Advanced Process Engineering Co-simulation (APECS) framework for advanced power generation systems. In final form, APECS will include a hierarchy of equipment models including Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD), process models, and reduced order models. A broad range of analysis capabilities will be supported.

One of the key ways by which REI is supporting NETL with APECS is through the development of CAPE-OPEN compliant models of key plant equipment.
