GCO Interoperability Demonstration November 2000

At the GCO Mid-term Meeting in Amsterdam in November, 2000, Malcolm Woodman from BP demonstrated CAPE-OPEN interoperability, using Aspen Plus from AspenTech and HYSYS.Plant from Hyprotech. This was a very significant event, since it was the first time that someone from an operating company had been able to show CAPE-OPEN "plug and play" interoperability working with competing commercial simulators. All of the software used is available from the AspenTech and Hyprotech websites, provided, of course, you have the respective licences. The demonstration shows the enormous progress that has been made by GCO in developing comprehensive and unambiguous specifications, and by both AspenTech and Hyprotech in making the use of CAPE-OPEN components in their simulators convenient and reliable.

You can find this PowerPoint presentation here.

It first describes the interchange of unit operation components between the simulators, and then goes on to show the Aspen Properties property system being used in HYSYS and a demonstration property package from Hyprotech being used in Aspen Plus. Some of the slides contain links to video clips that show the associated screen shots from the demonstration.

Notes on the video files and the PPT presentation
  • The video files are large (total of 21.5 MBytes). Gzipped files are provided for faster downloading. The .gz files can be unzipped by most popular file compression tools including winzip.
  • There are links to these video clips in the MS-Powerpoint presentation file. The files are expected to be stored in the same folder as the MS-Powerpoint presentation; if you put the files elsewhere, you should change the links in the ppt file by selecting the "links" option in the Edit menu, and indicate the correct location on your machine.
  • The ppt presentation contains links to Aspenplus and Hysis models files; these files are not provided, please contact Malcolm Woodman if you need them and if you have AspenPlus or Hysys.

demo_ap_htatms_htatpp.avi or demo_ap_htatms_htatpp.avi (gzipped)
This video shows the screen shots of Aspen Plus running the industrial HDA flowsheet, with CAPE-OPEN unit components and physical properties packages from both Hyprotech and AspenTech.

demo_hy_athtms_htatpp.avi (gzipped)
This video shows screen shots of HYSYS running the industrial HDA flowsheet, with CAPE-OPEN unit components and physical properties packages from both AspenTech and Hyprotech.

demo_eth_wat.avi (gzipped)
This video shows the screen shots of a simple comparison flash in which the results obtained from a flash in Aspen Plus are reproduced exactly in HYSYS, when the same Aspen property package is plugged into HYSYS. This demonstration is repeated using a Hyprotech property package.
