IFP Energies Nouvelles is a research institute covering a large range of businesses in the field of petroleum engineering and has a development strategy in developing simulation software (thermodynamic, hydrodynamic, unit operation, etc...) using the CAPE-OPEN standards.

IFP Energies Nouvelles also highly active in the evolution of the CAPE-OPEN standards by participating in different Special Interest Groups (SIGs). IFP Energies Nouvelles has developed a large number of tools to help end-users to develop their CAPE-OPEN component. One of these tools is a Unit Operation Wizard.

Project description:  CO-compliant thermo

CARNOT is a physical thermodynamic system and physical properties package. It can be used as pre-processor or through CAPE-OPEN interfaces. CARNOT is based on IFP Energies Nouvelles developed / tested / optimized models and is dedicated to Upstream and Downstream.

CARNOT has been validated with Aspen HYSYS, Aspen Plus, COFE, PRO/II and Simulis Thermodynamics.

A Thermodynamic Wizard has been developed and presented at the 4th CAPE-OPEN European Conference in Heidelberg, Germany. It enables the thermodynamic expert to create a 1.0 CAPE-OPEN compliant Property Package using CARNOT, the IFP Energies Nouvelles thermodynamic package. The use of the Wizard is illustrated here.

Project description: CO-compliant generic reactor model

FIBER is IFP Energies Nouvelles' generic FIxed BEd Reactor model. Two specific applications were developed for C4 Isomerisation and Selective Hydrogenation. These applications were created using AspenTech's Unit Operation Wizard and are therefore compliant with CAPE-OPEN 0.93.

FIBER applications have been validated within Aspen HYSYS and Aspen Plus. Validation in Pro/II is expected soon.

Project description: TINA

TINA is a collaborative project between IFP Energies Nouvelles and TOTAL. Objectives are to develop CAPE-OPEN Unit Operations in the field of flow assurance. Therefore, two different kinds of Pipe Unit operations have been developed:

Static pipe

  • Flow under steady-state conditions is solved through the whole pipe
  • Fully compositional calculations are performed
  • 2-phase and 3-phase hydrodynamic correlations are used
  • Thermal exchanges with the surrounding environment are taken into account
  • Several pipe insulation options are available
Transient pipe
  • DFM: Drift Flux Model
  • NPW: No Pressure Wave model
  • Main features
    • Mass, momentum and energy balances are solved
    • Models are fully compositional
    • 2 phase and 3 phase hydrodynamic module has been developed to ensure continuity and derivability of hydrodynamic functions for robust calculations

Furthermore a Simple Transient PI (Productivity Index) module has been developed that correlates the well production rate to the drawdown.

TINA applications have been validated within Aspen Hysys, Aspen Plus, PRO/II, COFE and INDISS especially for transient calculations, with also different CAPE-OPEN Thermodynamic Systems such as MultiFlash, Simulis Thermodynamics, TEA.
