EDITORIAL - CO Standard Implementation on the Move
The implementation of the CAPE-OPEN standard continues to grow. Numerous CO compliant Process Modelling Components (PMCs) and Process
Modelling Environments (PMEs) are now available from a mix of sources (software vendors and universities). Companies have also undertaken a number of projects to make their
own PMCs CO compliant, beginning a future where they achieve the CO vision: to deliver the power of component software and open standard interfaces in computer-aided
process engineering.
The CO-LaN continues to refine and expand the CO standard through the activities of the Special Interest Groups (SIGs). Please see the SIG reports in this newsletter for
the latest on their progress and plans. SIGs present an opportunity for CO-LaN members to shape the CO standard and to learn a great deal from their colleagues in the CAPE
community. Perhaps the fastest way for your organisation to intimately learn the CO standard is to join a SIG of interest. Please contact the respective SIG leaders to find
out how to gain value for your organisation. In addition to all that you will learn, you will be contributing to the health of CAPE across the process industries!
Ask anyone who has participated in a standards organisation - the work can be hard and time consuming, but when each element of a standard is put in place, the value
becomes obvious. CO-LaN is making that value happen in CAPE.

USER TIPS
Remember to visit the CO-LaN web site (Standard Specification) to better understand both the method and the opportunity of implementing CO standards. If you are a CAPE software developer, you will find CO testers and the CO standards documentation. If you are a CAPE software user, you will find guidance on the use of CAPE tools in a CO-compliant environment. There is a great deal of information on the web site to guide you and offer insight.
Feel free to contact a CO-LaN member to help you focus your activities. These people can answer questions, discuss the philosophy of CO standards, direct you to CO standards experts, and give you a glimpse of current and future activities.

CURRENT ISSUES
The CO-LaN Special Interest Groups (SIGs), are up and running to refine existing standards, expand them as needed, and define new standards. The current SIGs, SIG leaders, and current focus areas are:
- NUMERICAL SOLVERS - Michel Pons, Atofina. ON HOLD pending priority interests.
- INTEROPERABILITY - Peter Banks, BP. Interoperability Support for testing software interoperability.
- THERMODYNAMICS - Werner Merk, Dow. For implementation, maintenance, and management of existing interfaces. Expansion into polymers and solids.
- UNIT OPERATIONS - Celeste Colantonio, Shell Chemicals. For implementation, maintenance, and management of existing interfaces. Expansion into dynamics.
