Editorial - GCO Support Complete - CO-LaN Takes Over CO Update
With the release of Volume 6 of CAPE-OPEN Update, the GCO Support project is now complete. Since the completion of the Global CAPE-OPEN
project (GCO), the CO-LaN has conducted a large number of dissemination activities - a key to making sure that the progress of GCO is implemented in the CAPE community.
This newsletter may be the most familiar aspect of our dissemination work, but there have also been a number of CO days at various sites, presentations and papers at many
conferences, upgrades of the CO-LaN web site and so on.
Without effective dissemination, it would be much too easy to have a "successful" standards development effort that comes to nothing because it is not put to
widespread use. Without the support of the European Community under the "Industrial and Materials Technologies" and "Competitive and Sustainable Growth"
Programmes, the CO standard risked such a fate. Fortunately, this did not occur and we wish to acknowledge the funding received - it was put to good use!
The support has ended, but the CO-LaN will continue in making sure that the CAPE community is kept informed and active, and that the CO standard continues to grow in
breadth and depth. Your participation in CO standard implementation and use can help you and your organisation get the most value from your CAPE efforts, so stay tuned for
future issues of CO Update, and visit the CO-LaN web site (http://www.colan.org) for lots of valuable information, guidance, downloads, and technical information.
This issue of the newsletter is a new format. We will no longer be offering PDF files, but rather direct links to the sections of the newsletter. The links
above to the Member Profiles, the Technical Article, and the recent CO-LaN minutes show you how this works. While at present, our graphics are not at all flashy,
perhaps we will have a little more color and "flash" for the next issue. In the mean time, all of the content is there!
And don't forget: being a CO-LaN member gives your organisation the opportunity to connect with the leading experts and thinkers in the field plus a strong role in
guiding further development of the CO standard. If you're serious about CAPE, this is the place to be!

AspenTech joins CO-LaN
As you know, AspenTech and Hyprotech were key contributors to the CAPE-OPEN and Global CAPE-OPEN projects, and since they have become one
organisation they have continued to contribute strongly to the SIGs (Special Interest Groups). It gives us great pleasure that AspenTech has now officially joined the
CO-LaN.

SimSci Releases CO Compliant PRO/II 6.0
SimSci PRO/II® 6.0 is enhanced with new features designed to help users reduce model development time and increase plant profitability.
PRO/II offers new ways to help users save time and solve challenging and complex process industry problems. Among the new features is the implementation of the CO
interface standard for both unit operations and thermodynamics. Specifically, version 6.0 offers the ability to use any CAPE-OPEN Unit operation in PRO/II and the ability
for any CAPE-OPEN compliant simulator to access SIMSCI thermodynamics. See the article in this newsletter for details on SimSci's CO implementation.

User tips
Remember to visit the CO-LaN web site (http://www.colan.org then click Standard Specification) to better understand both the method and
the opportunity of implementing CO standards. If you are a CAPE software developer, you will find CO testers and the CO standards documentation. If you are a CAPE software
user, you will find guidance on the use of CAPE tools in a CO-compliant environment. There is a great deal of information on the web site to guide you and offer insight.
Feel free to contact a CO-LaN member to help you focus your activities. These people can answer questions, discuss the philosophy of CO standards, direct you to CO
standards experts, and give you a glimpse of current and future activities.

Current issues
The CO-LaN Special Interest Groups (SIGs), are up and running to refine existing standards, expand them as needed, and define new standards.
The current SIGs, SIG leaders, and current focus areas are:
- NUMERICAL SOLVERS - Michel Pons, Atofina. For finalising 1.1 specifications.
- INTEROPERABILITY - Peter Banks, BP. Interoperability Support for testing software interoperability.
- THERMODYNAMICS - Werner Merk, Dow. For implementation, maintenance, and management of existing interfaces. Expansion into polymers and solids.
- UNIT OPERATIONS - Celeste Colantonio, Shell Chemical. For implementation, maintenance, and management of existing interfaces. Expansion into dynamics.
